The Paediatric Physiotherapy Department specializes in the assessment, treatment, rehabilitation, and prevention of developmental, neurological, musculoskeletal, and genetic conditions affecting infants, children, and adolescents. The department is committed to providing evidence-based, family-centered physiotherapy care aimed at promoting optimal growth, motor development, functional independence, participation, and quality of life in children with diverse physical and developmental challenges. Through early intervention strategies, advanced therapeutic approaches, and multidisciplinary rehabilitation, the department plays a vital role in maximizing each child’s functional potential and supporting holistic child development. Undergraduate (BPT) and postgraduate students receive extensive academic and clinical exposure that strengthens their clinical reasoning, paediatric handling skills, communication abilities, and confidence in paediatric rehabilitation. The department adopts a multidisciplinary and collaborative approach in pediatric rehabilitation through active coordination with various departments of RajaRajeswari Medical College and Hospital, including pediatrics, neurology, orthopaedics, occupational therapy, speech therapy, psychology, and medical social work, along with collaboration with NDC Spastic Society of Karnataka for specialized pediatric and community-based rehabilitation exposure. This interdisciplinary collaboration supports comprehensive evaluation, individualized rehabilitation planning, integrated treatment approaches, and holistic management of children with developmental, neurological, and musculoskeletal conditions. Students receive extensive clinical exposure in conditions such as cerebral palsy, developmental delay, autism spectrum disorders, neuromuscular and pediatric orthopaedic disorders, congenital deformities, gait abnormalities, and post-surgical rehabilitation, while developing skills in developmental assessment, milestone evaluation, posture and movement analysis, gait assessment, functional evaluation, and evidence-based pediatric physiotherapy practices within a family-centered and inclusive rehabilitation framework. The department offers a child-friendly therapeutic environment equipped with age-appropriate rehabilitation facilities and play-based therapeutic equipment designed to encourage active participation and functional learning. Advanced pediatric rehabilitation approaches practiced in the department include Neurodevelopmental Treatment (NDT), sensory integration approaches, task-oriented training, balance and coordination training, gait training, strength and endurance training, early intervention programs, functional electrical stimulation, posture correction, and pediatric exercise therapy. Therapy sessions are designed to be engaging, goal-oriented, and individualized according to the child’s developmental needs and functional abilities. Parent education, caregiver training, home exercise programs, and counseling form an essential part of the rehabilitation process to ensure continuity of care and long-term functional improvement. A major strength of the department is its emphasis on hands-on clinical learning and supervised patient management. Undergraduate students actively participate in assessment and treatment sessions under the guidance of experienced faculty members, while postgraduate students are involved in advanced clinical decision-making, evidence-based practice, case discussions, and research activities. Academic learning is further enhanced through seminars, case presentations, journal clubs, workshops, clinical demonstrations, webinars, CME programs, and guest lectures focusing on recent advances in pediatric rehabilitation and developmental therapy.
