Community Based Rehabilitation

Community Based Rehabilitation Overview

The Community Based Rehabilitation (CBR) Department focuses on delivering physiotherapy and rehabilitation services at the community level with emphasis on accessibility, prevention, early intervention, inclusive rehabilitation, and community participation. The department is committed to improving the functional independence, health, and quality of life of individuals within their own home and community environments. Students are trained to assess and manage individuals with disabilities, chronic health conditions, geriatric problems, musculoskeletal conditions, neurological disabilities, and functional limitations through community-oriented rehabilitation approaches. The department also emphasizes health promotion, preventive healthcare, awareness programs, workplace ergonomics, accessibility improvement, disability prevention, and multidisciplinary coordination to strengthen community health and promote social inclusion. The department functions in association with the Department of Community Medicine and Rajarajeswari Medical College and Hospital to support comprehensive community healthcare services and rehabilitation programs. Through this interdisciplinary approach, students participate in community surveys, health screening programs, disability identification camps, awareness activities, rehabilitation services, school health programs, geriatric assessments, workplace ergonomic programs, accessibility audits, and public health initiatives conducted in both urban and rural communities. Students are actively involved in field postings, community outreach programs, and rehabilitation activities under the supervision of faculty members and healthcare professionals. The department promotes teamwork among physiotherapists, community medicine professionals, healthcare workers, social workers, and rehabilitation teams to ensure holistic community-based care and effective healthcare delivery. The department provides extensive field-based clinical exposure through regular community postings, outreach services, surveys, and rehabilitation programs conducted in urban and rural settings. Community services and postings are conducted at: ● Channasandra Urban Health Training Centre
● Chunchanakuppe Rural Health Training Centre
● KR Halli Rural Health Training Centre
Students gain practical experience through home visits, disability screening camps, community surveys, geriatric assessments, school screening programs, ergonomic awareness activities, workplace ergonomics assessments, accessibility audits, fitness and health promotion programs, assistive device awareness, follow-up rehabilitation care, and community-based rehabilitation services. These field postings help students understand grassroots healthcare delivery, rural and urban healthcare challenges, environmental barriers, and the importance of accessible rehabilitation services within the community. The department utilizes basic rehabilitation and assessment equipment required for community physiotherapy and outreach services, including mobility aids, walkers, gait training aids, exercise therapy equipment, balance training tools, therapeutic bands, posture assessment tools, BP apparatus, pulse oximeters, anthropometric assessment tools, functional assessment scales, ergonomic education materials, and community screening formats. Students are trained in functional assessment, disability evaluation, fall risk assessment, geriatric physiotherapy, home-based rehabilitation, posture correction, exercise prescription, patient education, workplace ergonomics, accessibility assessment, and community rehabilitation planning. A major strength of the department is its emphasis on hands-on community exposure, communication skills, patient interaction, teamwork, survey methodology, documentation, and public health-oriented rehabilitation practice. Academic learning is further strengthened through seminars, workshops, awareness programs, camps, case presentations, community surveys, field demonstrations, and interdisciplinary academic activities related to community health and rehabilitation.
